Aperture Adventure

Hi there. I’m looking at starting a new hobby.

Something that I can integrate well into my current preoccupations.

Backstory. I’ve been going a lot to our local drugstore over the last couple of years to pick up printed photos, and I find myself wanting more. You see, every year, I organize a photo wall when it’s a family member’s birthday to look back on the year that was and fondly recall the highlights from time past. It started with my firstborn, and I've been doing it for almost 6 years now.

Lately, though, I feel that it’s time to step up my game. Phone photos, though lovely on a small screen, look underwhelming in the harsher reality of a 10x15 standard photo print. Reviewing my work on my secondborn’s recent birthday, I just wish for the colors to be more vivid and to capture how my children’s eyes twinkle when they laugh.

And just to bottle up all these precious memories in vibrant photographs, hopefully as colorful and as bright as I remember them.

So yes, here we go. I’ll dive into photography with the people and things I love as my subject—my family, food, and most definitely also copious amounts of flowers and pretty little things I find in nature.

I’m currently looking at Canon beginner-level cameras and still have to decide which one to use to kickstart this new-ish hobby. I mean, I’ve probably spent 10,000 hours taking my children’s portraits, so I’d say this investment in a professional-grade (but for beginners) camera is justified and will be put to good use. I’m already feeling giddy, and quite honestly also intimidated, at the thought of learning all these new photography concepts, and maybe also some physics by accident!

Like always, I’ll try to keep it simple, scrapbook-style, and we’ll see where it takes me.
